Examiner Insight

Pathology and Pharmacology together make up ~40% of Step 1. Master mechanisms — not drug names — and you can reason through anything. For pharmacology, build a mental map of receptor classes and side effect profiles, then layer specific drugs on top.

Frequently asked questions

Is USMLE Step 1 still scored?

No. Since January 2022, USMLE Step 1 is reported as pass/fail only. There is no numeric score. However, Step 2 CK is still scored and increasingly used for residency ranking.

How many questions are on USMLE Step 1?

Step 1 has approximately 280 questions across 7 blocks of 40 questions each. Each block is 60 minutes. Total exam time is approximately 8 hours including breaks.

How long should I study for USMLE Step 1?

Most medical students dedicate 6–10 weeks of dedicated study after completing Year 2 coursework. A structured schedule combining First Aid review, Anki flashcards, and daily practice questions is the most common high-yield approach.

What resources do I use alongside SGrade for Step 1?

SGrade covers question practice and predicted readiness. Pair it with First Aid for Step 1 (reading), Anki decks (Zanki/AnKing) for memorisation, and Sketchy for micro and pharm. Practice questions are the single highest-yield study method.
